The checklist

1. Name the exact partPart number, VIN or chassis number (cars), model number (laptops, phones, appliances). The label on the old part or the back of the device is enough.

3. Ask about condition and warrantyUsed, refurbished and new-compatible are different things. Ask how it was tested and how many days the shop stands behind it.

7. Be careful with very low pricesIf one reply is far below the others, ask why: it may be untested, a copy, or the wrong part.

Test or inspect the part before you pay when you can, and meet in a public place if you are buying from an individual. Ask the shop to confirm availability by phone or chat before you travel.
